A baby registry is a set of decisions someone has already spent time making. Using it thoughtfully saves the parents from exchanging duplicates or comparing a surprise substitute with the item they chose.
Open the current list
Use the link supplied by the parents or shower host. Check whether the item is already purchased or reserved, then compare the model, size, color and quantity. A screenshot of a list can be out of date. If you buy the same item elsewhere, use the registry’s supported purchase-marking process or coordinate discreetly with the host.
Useful ways to stay within budget
One requested everyday item
Pick a remaining item within your budget instead of substituting a larger bundle. Match the requested size and quantity; more is not automatically more useful.
A contribution to a larger choice
If their registry offers a group contribution, use that official option. If it does not, coordinate with one other giver and agree who will purchase before collecting money.
Something for the parents
An offered meal, groceries or another practical gesture can complement a registry gift. Ask about timing and preferences. Avoid gifts that create a booking, subscription or storage obligation.
For baby gear, verify the product
A registry listing is not a safety endorsement. Check the exact model for recalls and follow the manufacturer’s age and use instructions. For anything intended for infant sleep, consult current CPSC guidance before buying. CPSC advises a bare sleep space and warns against pillows, padded bumpers and other soft bedding. A decorative nursery bundle should not be treated as a safe sleep setup.

Make receiving it easy
Follow the parents’ requested shipping arrangement. Keep their delivery address private, include a gift receipt where available and check when the return period starts. If the shower is weeks before the due date, a short exchange window may matter. Keep oversized packages at home until you know where they should go.
